A young toddler in Delhi, India, named Akshaj Khandelwal, is facing a unique medical condition where his legs are swollen to four times their normal size due to a rare genetic disorder known as Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS). This condition, with an incidence rate of 1 in 100,000 people, has made it impossible for him to walk normally. Even taking a few steps causes his feet to bleed, making it impossible for him to go to school without assistance.
However, Akshaj was oblivious to his condition. He saw his oversize leg as a special ability that would one day turn him into a superhero, considering himself fortunate to have it. Unfortunately, many people kept their distance from him out of fear of contracting the illness he had. My family is concerned about the possibility of me being bullied once I start school as I grow up.
Mr. Khandelwal, Akshaj’s father, is of the opinion that his son is still too young to understand the harsh reality of his illness, especially since there is no known cure for it.
He mentioned, “Our son is unaware of his condition. We don’t want him to feel disheartened. In his mind, his large legs are what make him a superhero. He is too young to understand the reality of his illness. He sees having big legs as a superpower. We are optimistic that he can overcome this challenge in a positive way.”
The couple then visited numerous hospitals in New Delhi but unfortunately returned without finding any solutions. Doctors at Fortis Hospital are still puzzled by this syndrome and are not confident that the child can be successfully treated.
Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS) is a rare genetic condition that impacts the growth of blood vessels, soft tissues, and bones.
According to Dr. Krishna Chugh, a pediatrician, KTS is a malformation that affects vein development, especially in children. In this condition, there is a tendency for bleeding from the intestines due to abnormal blood supply. The veins become stretched which can result in bleeding.
Akshaj’s parents are determined to continue their search for a cure for their son, but they are finding it heartbreaking to witness his suffering. Shruti, Akshaj’s mother, expressed their frustration, saying, “We have consulted numerous doctors in Delhi, but so far, we have not found any effective treatment. His condition is deteriorating, and it pains me to see him losing weight and his leg getting worse day by day.”
